Flow meters are often called flow indicators, rotameters, flow rate sensors, flow transmitters, water meters, gas meters and air flow sensors. The nomenclature used to describe flowmeters is both regional and industry specific.

What is normally important to know when choosing a flow meter?
- Is the fluid water, air, gas, steam or a chemical?
- Do you want to count total volumes, flow rate or both?
- Is the liquid viscosity high? E.g. water has a low viscosity while some oils have a high viscosity.
- Do you require local indication i.e. do you want to see the flow rates displayed on a local or remote display or both?
- Do you require a signal of the flow rate to be sent to a remote location. What type of flow signal do you require? e.g. 4-20mA, Modbus, HART.
- What is the minimum and maximum detectable flow velocity you require?
- Is the application low or high pressure? Do you need screwed or flanged connections?
- Is the media being measured toxic or corrosive? Is safety an issue?
- Is the flow instrument installed in a hazardous area? Does it require ATEX, IECEx approvals for e.g. Zone 1 or Class 1 Division 1?
- What are the pipe sizes and pipe materials?
- Does the flow meter work of mains power e.g. 220VAC, 24VDC or do you require a battery powered flowmeter? If you require a battery operated a flow meter, how long do you need the battery power to last?
- Is flow meter accuracy and repeatability of utmost importance? e.g. is it controlling a process or is the fluid being measured expensive?
Before buying a flow meter, it is important to know the actual requirement. Some flowmeters suit a budgetary need, and we could say they are the “best price”, but others fill a stringent technical requirement and might be working under a higher pressure or temperature. The price of a flow meter has to be calculated on the basis of the cost of the meter, the cost of the installation, the complexity of the set up, the maintenance requirements and other factors which an owner or operator of a plant or system must consider such as the MTBF (mean time between failure) for the flow device installed.
How long will it take to deliver the flowmeter to my store?
This will depend on the complexity and the type of meter as well as the availability. It can take between 1 week to 12 weeks. Some flow meters are also in our local stock.
