Air flow sensors play a major role in modern industrial settings, especially in the HVAC industry but are also an important tool for scientific, environmental as well as leisure activities.
A portable air flow meter is a useful tool for measuring air flow in ducts, factory tail gas, various HVAC air flow systems in shopping malls, banks, hospitals, casinos, food factories and anywhere that both warm and cold air need to be measured. What is being measured initially is the air velocity in either ft/s or m/s but this can easily be translated to an actual volumetric flow rate by simple calculations or by the portable air flow sensor itself.
One traditional way to measure the air flow in an air conditioning system would be to use a pitot tube type air velocity meter or an air vane instrument like a vane anemometer.
The options available for either air speed or wind measurement do not always have an extended rod or an insertion probe. This extended probe can be very useful and convenient for technicians who want to reach a particular area in a closed system (air ducts for example) who have opted not to use a balometer because the air flow and the temperature measurement at a certain point or points is going to be sufficient for them to ascertain whether or not maintenance needs to be carried out or even possibly a change or redesign of the air system.
The more adept user might even be familiar with the Multi-Point Airflow Measurement with ANSI/ASHRAE Standards for Traversing a Duct. This will mean that the anemometer should be able to conveniently extended far enough into the regular or irregular duct and have markings on the rod/extender which can show the technician how far the air flow rod has been extended. One useful feature in the SG Flow smart sensor is the ability to adjust the angle of the measurement point at the tip of the air flow rod extension.
Air Flow Instrument Style
Insertion Probe Type – The probe is easily inserted into ducts or open air pathways, making it ideal for existing systems without the need for complex installations. This style is widely used in HVAC, ventilation, and industrial process applications to provide real-time, accurate flow measurements without disrupting the system.
Measures Air Temperature
Equipped with temperature sensors, these probes can measure ambient air temperature within ducts or open air environments. Using hot-wire, vane, or thermal anemometer technology, the probe captures airspeed accurately, even in low or fluctuating flow conditions.
- Measures Air Velocity
- Calculates Air Volumetric Flow
The Smart Air Flow sensor does not use differential pressure or vane anemometer approach. The design uses the well known principle employed by thermal mass meters or hot wire anemometers.
With the thermal air flow meter, the volume flow control of the ventilation or air conditioning system can be adjusted or modified when necessary, since the air flow data is easily obtained.
Other applications might included the measurement of large air flows in low pressure boilers, dryers as well as HVAC systems mentioned previously. Whether the ducts are circular or rectangular, the velocity measurements can be made at each segment of the cross section necessary to calculate the flow volume more accurately.
